What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 29

Here are those players that have worn the number 29 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Carl Laurie (Jul 99 – Jun 00)

Laurie came through the Academy without making a first-team appearance for the club and spent time at Northwich Victoria and Hyde United before retiring from the game.

Dean Howell (Jul 00 – Dec 01)

Defender Howell signed from Notts County in the summer of 2000 but would only make one appearance for the club, spending time on loan at both Rochdale and Southport, before signing permanently for the latter. He would also play for Morecambe, Halifax Town for 2 spells, Colchester United, Weymouth, Grays Athletic, Rushden & Diamonds, Aldershot Town, Bury on loan twice, Crawley Town and Fleetwood Town before retiring in the summer of 2014.

Paul Tierney (Nov 02 – Mar 03)

Left-back Tierney joined the club on loan from Manchester United, making 22 appearances for the club. He would also play for Colchester United, Bradford City, Livingston, Blackpool, Stockport County and Altrincham before retiring in the summer of 2009.

Billy Jones (Jul 03 – Jun 04)

We looked at Jones’ career in the number 2 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Mark Rivers (Jul 04 – Jun 05)

We looked at Rivers’ career in the number 10 column, he wore this number in the first season of his second spell with the club.

Andy Bond (Jul 05 – Jun 06)

We looked at Bond’s career in the number 28 column yesterday, he wore this number in his first spell at the club.

John Dillon (Jul 06 – Jun 07)

Midfielder Dillon came through the Academy without making a first-team appearance before being released in the summer of 2007. He would go on to play for Witton Albion, Warrington Town, Sligo Rovers, Dundalk, Southport, Connah’s Quay, Colway Bay and Glossop North End before retiring in the summer of 2016. He currently works as a video analyst for the club.

Ashley Westwood (Jul 08 – Jun 09)

We looked at Westwood’s career in the number 4 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Adam Bogdan (Sep 09 – Oct 09)

Hungarian goalkeeper Bogdan joined the club on a month-long loan from Bolton Wanderers, making a single appearance before returning to the Trotters. He would also play for Liverpool, Wigan Athletic and Hibernian (initially on loan then in a permanent move) before joining current club Ferencvaros at the start of the month.

Bertrand Bossu (Oct 09 – Nov 09)

French goalkeeper Bossu would sign for the club in late October 2009 before leaving 6 days later without making an appearance for the club. He would go on to play for Harlow Town, hometown Calais RUFC and Gravelines before retiring in the summer of 2015.

Max Clayton (Jul 10 – Jun 11)

We looked at Clayton’s career in the number 7 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Jason Oswell (Jul 11 – Jun 12)

Striker Oswell came through the Academy without making a first-team appearance (but spend time on loan at Market Drayton Town, Nantwich Town and Rhyl in his single season as a professional). He would join Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the summer of 2012 before spells at Nantwich, Witton Albion, APIA in Australia, Rhyl, Airbus UK, Newtown, Stockport County, Morecambe and Wrexham before joining AFC Telford United earlier in the month.

Billy Waters (Jul 12 – Jun 14)

We looked at Waters’ career in the number 17 column, he wore this number in his first two seasons with the first-team squad.

Febian Brandy (Sep 14 – Nov 14)

Forward Brandy joined the club on loan from Rotherham United, making 8 appearances for the club in his 2-month spell. He would also play for Rochdale, Ubon UMT United in Thailand, Ebbsfleet United and Droylsden before retiring in the summer of 2018.

Semi Ajayi (Nov 15 – Feb 16)

Defender Ajayi joined the club on loan from Cardiff City on a 3-month loan deal, making 13 appearances for the club. He would also join Rotherham United on loan, which would become permanent, before joining current club West Bromwich Albion last summer.

Luke Offord (Jul 17 – Jun 18)

We looked at Offord’s career in the number 21 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Nicky Hunt (Jul 18 – Jun 19)

We looked at Hunt’s career in the number 15 column, he wore this number in his first season with the club.

Stephen Walker (Jan 20 – May 20)

Forward Walker joined the club on loan from Middlesbrough, making 6 appearances in his short-spell before the season was stopped. Rumour has it that he is still celebrating his goal against Macclesfield Town in the Gresty Road End but, on a serious note, it would be great to be able to sign him on loan again for at least some of next season.
