What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 17

Here are those players that have worn the number 17 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Neil Sorvel (Jul 99 – Jun 02)

We looked at Sorvel’s career in the number 7 column, he wore this number in the first 3 seasons of his second spell with the club.

Steve Jones (Jul 02 – Jun 03)

We looked at Jones’ career in the number 9 column, he wore this number in his second season with the club.

James Robinson (Jul 03 – Mar 05)

Robinson came through the academy but would only make 15 appearances for the first-team before joining Icelandic side IBV. He would also play for Accrington Stanley and Altrincham before finishing his career in Australia to play for Richmond SC, Melbourne Victory, Marconi Stallions, Perth Glory, North Queensland Fury, Oakleigh Cannons, FC Bullen Lions, Sriwijaya (from Indonesia), Dandenong Thunder and Ballarat Red Devils, where he was player/manager. He would also manage Brisbane Roar’s youth side before rejoining the Red Devils, now renamed Ballarat City.

Mark Rivers (Jul 05 – Jan 06)

We looked at Rivers’ career in the number 10 column, he wore this number in his second season in his second spell with the club.

Darren Moss (Jul 06 – Jun 07)

We looked at Moss’ career in the number 2 column, he wore this number in his final season with the club.

Mark Carrington (Jul 07 – Jun 08)

Carrington came through the Alex academy, making 37 appearances for the first team before leaving for MK Dons in the summer of 2009. He would also play for Hamilton Academical and Bury before joining current club Wrexham in September 2013.

Byron Moore (Jul 08 – Jun 09)

We looked at Moore’s career in the number 11 column, he wore this number in his second season with the first-team squad.

Scott McManus (Jul 09 – Jun 10)

McManus joined the club from Curzon Ashton in the summer of 2008, making just 6 appearances for the side before joining FC United of Manchester in the summer of 2010. He would also play for Halifax Town (including scoring their only goal in the 2015/16 FA Trophy win over Grimsby Town) before signing for current club Coalville Town in the summer of 2018.

Danny Shelley (Jul 10 – Jun 11)

We looked at Shelley’s career in the number 12 column, he wore this number in his third season with the first-team squad.

Kelvin Mellor (Jul 11 – Jun 12)

We looked at Mellor’s career in the number 3 column, he wore this number in his third season with the first-team squad.

George Ray (Jul 12 – Jun 13)

We looked at Ray’s career in the number 5 column, he wore this number during his second season with the first-team squad.

Tom Hitchcock (Nov 13 – Jan 14)

Hitchcock joined the club on loan from Queens Park Rangers in November 2013 and would score 3 goals in 6 appearances during that spell. He would also play for Rotherham United on loan and would also play for MK Dons, Fleetwood Town, Stevenage, the Alex again (where he wouldn’t score in his 7 appearances), Boreham Wood, Chelmsford City, Biggleswade Town, Chesham United, Harlow Town and Cheshunt before joining Bedford Town last summer.

Billy Waters (Jul 14 – Jun 15)

Waters came through the Academy with the club, making 30 appearances for the club before Cheltenham Town signed him in the summer of 2015. He would join current club Northampton Town in the summer of 2017, he’s also spent time on loan at Cambridge United, Cheltenham and Newport County in his time with the Cobblers.

Stephen Kingsley (Aug 15 – Nov 15)

Left-back Kingsley joined the club on loan from Swansea City in August 2015 and would make 12 appearances for the club before his loan expired. He would leave the Swans in the summer of 2017 for Hull City and is currently a free agent after that 3-year spell with the Tigers.

Daniel Udoh (Jul 16 – Jun 18)

Udoh joined the club in March 2016 from Ilkeston, making 20 appearances for the club before joining AFC Telford United in the summer of 2018. After one successful season with the Bucks, he joined Shrewsbury Town last summer.

Paul Green (Jul 18 – Jun 19)

We also looked at Green’s career in the number 12 column, he wore this number in his first season of his two during his permanent spell with the club.

Chuma Anene (Jul 19 – Jun 20)

The most recent player to wear the number was Norweigan striker Anene who managed 9 goals in 34 appearances for the club. He’s a player that would be a decent signing for any League 2 side next season and a good option for a League 1 side.
