What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 15

In this column, we look at those players who have worn the number 15 for Crewe Alexandra since squad numbers were brought in during the summer of 1999.

Mark Foran (Jul 99 – Aug 00)

The first player on the list is Foran who was a central defender who joined the club from Peterborough in December 1997 from Peterborough United for £30,000 who made 34 appearances at the club in an injury-plagued spell. He joined Bristol Rovers in the summer of 2000 for £45,000 and would also play for Telford United and Northwich Victoria before retiring due to injuries in 2006.

Wayne Collins (Jul 01 – Jun 03)

Next saw midfielder Collins rejoin the club for a second spell in the summer of 2001 following 5 years away from the club. He would make 24 appearances in that second spell (after making almost 150 appearances in his first) and spent a short spell at Stockport County before retiring in 2004.

Luke Varney (Jul 03 – Jun 06)

We looked at Varney’s career in the number 12 column, with Varney wearing the number during his first 3 full seasons with the club.

Lee Bell (Jul 06 – Jan 07)

We looked at Bell’s career in the number 7 column, with Bell wearing the number in his final 6 months during his first spell with the club.

Danny Woodards (Jan 07 – Jun 07)

We looked at Woodards’ career in the number 2 column, with Woodards wearing the number in his first 6 months at the club.

Tom Pope (Jul 07 – Jun 08)

Pope joined the club from Biddulph Victoria for a small fee in October 2005 following time with the Alex as a youngster. He would make 64 appearances for the side before leaving for Rotherham United in the summer of 2009 for £150,000 and he would also play for Port Vale and Bury before rejoining boyhood team Vale in the summer of 2017.

George Abbey (Jul 08 – Jun 09)

Nigerian international defender Abbey was next to wear the number, he arrived from Port Vale in the summer of 2007 and would play 30 times across the two seasons he had with the club and would retire in the summer of 2011 following a season with Cypriot team Akritas Chlorakas.

Shaun Miller (Jul 09 – Jun 10)

We looked at Miller’s career in the number 9 column, with Miller wearing the number in his fourth season in his first spell with the club.

Mat Mitchel-King (Jul 10 – Jun 11)

We looked at Mitchel-King’s career in the number 12 column, with Mitchel-King wearing the number in his second season with the club.

Carl Martin (Jul 11 – Jun 12)

Martin signed for the Alex in October 2009 from Wealdstone and would make 40 appearances for the club in his 3 seasons. He would also play for Macclesfield Town before retiring from playing following a second spell with Wealdstone. He would go into coaching with Watford at Under-18 level and he is currently at Southampton as their interim head coach at the same age-group.

Gregor Robertson (Jul 12 – Jun 14)

The Scottish left-back would join the club in the summer of 2012, following 5 seasons with Chesterfield, playing 40 games across his two seasons with the club. He would also play for Northampton Town and Grimsby Town following his Alex spell and currently is a journalist who works for The Times.

Thierry Audel (Jul 14 – Feb 15)

Defender Audel joined the club in the summer of 2013 from Macclesfield Town for an undisclosed fee, making just 5 appearances for the club in his near-two years at the club (although he did have 2 spells on loan at Lincoln City in the National League during that time). He would rejoin Macclesfield in February 2015 and would also play for Notts County, Barrow and Welling United before joining current club Brackley Town last summer.

David Fox (Jul 15 – Jun 16)

Midfielder Fox joined the Alex in the summer of 2015 following his second spell at Colchester United, making 41 appearances for the club in his only season at Gresty Road. He retired from playing last summer following 3 seasons at Plymouth Argyle.

Danny Hollands (Jul 16 – Jul 17)

Hollands would join the club in the summer of 2016 after spending 2 seasons with Portsmouth, making 29 appearances in his only season. He joined current club Eastleigh that summer.

Ryan Wintle (Jul 17 – Jun 19)

We looked at Wintle’s career to date in the number 4 column, with him wearing the shirt in his third and fourth full seasons with the club.

Nicky Hunt (Jul 19 – Jun 20)

The latest number 15 was former Premier League defender Hunt who joined the club in the summer of 2018 following a successful trial period. He made 54 appearances for the club before not being offered a new deal this summer, he joined Darlington yesterday.
