What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 14

Here are those players that have worn the number 14 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Marcus Bignot (Jul 99 – Jun 00)

The first player on the list is Bignot who joined the club from Kidderminster Harriers in the summer of 1997 for £100,000 with him winning the Player of the Season in his first season with the club. He would make over 100 appearances for the club before joining Bristol Rovers in the summer of 2000 and would also play for Queens Park Rangers twice, Rushden & Diamonds, Millwall (initially on loan before signing permanently), Oldham Athletic, Kidderminster and Brackley Town. He would start his coaching career at Birmingham City Ladies (where he would manage them while playing for the Alex through to the 2nd spell at QPR), Solihull Moors (where he would be player/manager), Grimsby Town, Barrow (as interim assistant manager) and Chester before joining current club as joint manager of Guiseley 2 years ago with Russ O’Neill.

Kevin Street (Jul 00 – Jun 02)

Next player on the list is Academy product Street who also made his debut for the club in 1997, making over 100 appearances for the club before joining Northwich Victoria in the summer of 2002. He would also play for Bristol Rovers, Shrewsbury Town, Stafford Rangers twice, Altrincham, Nantwich Town, Kidsgrove Athletic and Alsager Town before joining current club Whitchurch Alport in the summer of 2017. He would also have a spell as joint caretaker manager at Stafford in his first spell with the club, was joint manager at Nantwich Town with Darren Tinson during his spell there and also coaches at Whitchurch currently.

David Vaughan (Jul 02 – Jun 03)

Ben Rix (Jul 03 – Jun 07)

We looked at Rix’s career in the number 12 column, he wore the number 14 in his third through sixth seasons with the first team.

Chris McCready (Jul 07 – Jun 09)

Next up was McCready who came through the Academy, making his debut for the club in 2000 before joining Tranmere Rovers in the summer of 2006. He would rejoin the Alex the following summer (wearing the number 14 during this spell), he would make over 100 appearances across the two spells before joining Northampton Town in the summer of 2009. He would also rejoin Tranmere on loan before a spell at Morecambe with him retiring in 2014.

Byron Moore (Jul 09 – Jun 11)

Antoni Sarcevic (Jul 11 – Nov 11)

Sarcevic joined the club from Woodley Sports in the summer of 2010 for an undisclosed fee and left the club in November the following year to Chester (who he had a loan spell with early in his first season) following only making 16 appearances for the first team. He would also play for Fleetwood Town, Shrewsbury Town and Plymouth Argyle, where he spent the last 3 seasons, so he is currently a free agent after rejecting the Pilgrims’ offer of a deal.

Kelvin Mellor (Jul 12 – Jun 13)

Brad Inman (Jul 13 – Jun 14)

Callum Saunders (Jul 14 – Jun 16)

Zoumana Bakayago (Jul 16 – Jun 17)

Callum Ainley (Jul 17 – Jun 18)

Alex Nicholls (Jul 18 – Jun 19)

The penultimate player on this list is Nicholls, who joined the club from Barnet in the summer of 2018. He would make 26 appearances for the club in his only season. He would join current club Stourbridge in the Northern Premier League following a short spell at Solihull Moors.

Oliver Finney (Jul 19 – present)

The current number 14 made his debut for the club in the final game of the 16/17 season but it would take until 2 seasons later for him to become a regular in the matchday squad following loan spells at Nantwich Town and Halesowen Town, both in the Northern Premier League. He has established himself as a regular in the first-team (making almost 50 appearances for the club already) and will be looking to make himself one of the first-choices in midfield next season.
