What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 28

Here are those players that have worn the number 28 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Rob Hulse (Jul 99 – Jun 00)

We looked at Hulse’s career in the number 9 column, he wore this number in his second season with the first-team squad.

Chris McCready (Jul 00 – Jun 02)

We looked at McCready’s career in the number 14 column, he wore this number in his first two seasons with the first-team squad.

Andy White (Oct 02 – Nov 02)

We looked at White’s career in the number 20 column, he wore this number in his loan spell with the club.

Jonathan Walters (Aug 03 – Sep 03)

Forward Walters joined the club on loan from Bolton Wanderers for a month-long spell that didn’t see him make an appearance due to a tooth infection. He would go on to play for Barnsley, Hull City, Scunthorpe United, Wrexham, Chester City, Ipswich Town, Stoke City, Burnley and a loan spell at Ipswich before retiring due to injury in March last year.

Andy Barrowman (Sep 03 – Oct 03)

Striker Barrowman would join the club on a similar deal to Walters, arriving from Birmingham City. He would make 4 appearances for the club and would also play for Blackpool, Mansfield Town and Walsall in England before returning to his homeland to play for Kilmarnock, Queen of the South, Ross County, Dunfermline Athletic in two spells, Dundee, Livingston, Greenock Morton, Albion Rovers and Arthurlie before retiring in the summer of 2018.

Gary Roberts (Feb 04 – Jun 04)

Kyle Wilson (Jul 04 – Jun 05)

Michael O’Connor (Jul 05 – Jun 06)

Mark Carrington (Jul 06 – Jun 07)

Simon Walton (Jul 09 – Jun 10)

Midfielder Walton joined the club on loan from Plymouth Argyle for the season with him making 33 appearances for the club. He would also play for Sheffield United, Hartlepool United, Stevenage, Crawley Town, Garforth Town, Guiseley, Sutton United and Billericay Town. He would join Maidstone United, initially on loan before becoming player/assistant manager in late 2018 before joining Havant & Waterlooville last summer as a player/coach.

Ashley Westwood (Jan 11 – Jun 11)

Defender Westwood joined the club for a second spell in January 2011, making 6 appearances in this spell (to go with the 135 that he made in 1995-1998). He would also play for Northampton Town, Kettering Town (as player/manager), Lincoln City and Portsmouth (as a player/coach) before retiring from playing in late 2012. He would also manage Indian side Bengaluru to two titles in 3 years at the club as well as 5 months as manager at Malaysian side Penang FA and a role as Director of Football at ATK (including a spell as caretaker manager in January 2018).

Jamie Lowry (Nov 11 – Jan 12)

Midfielder Lowry joined the club on loan from Chesterfield and would make 10 appearances for the club before being recalled by the Spireites. He would also play for Plymouth Argyle, Tiverton Town, Godolphin Atlantic and Truro City before rejoining Godolphin in 2014. He would become player/manager of the club for the 16/17 season and would also become a youth coach at Plymouth Argyle in early 2018, he is currently coaching there as well as dual-registered to play for Godolphin and Plymouth Parkway.

Andy Bond (Sep 12 – Oct 12)

Midfielder Bond rejoined the club on loan for a month from Colchester United, making 5 appearances for the club. He would also play for Bristol Rovers, Chester, Stevenage, Chorley, Crawley Town and AFC Fylde before joining current club York City last summer.

Mesca (Nov 13 – Jan 14)

Winger Mesca joined the club on loan from Fulham, making 6 appearances in his 6 weeks with the club. He would also play for AEL Limassol in Cyprus and Bulgarian side Beroe before returning to Cyprus to join current club Doxa Katokopias last summer.

Jamie Ness (Aug 14 – May 15)

Midfielder Ness joined the club on loan from Stoke City for the 14/15 season, making 34 appearances for the club. He would also play for Scunthorpe United and Plymouth Argyle before joining current club Dundee last summer.

Toby Mullarkey (Jul 15 – Jun 16)

Midfielder turned defender Mullarkey came through the Academy, making a single appearance in his only season as a professional. He would join Leek Town and also play for Witton Albion and Nantwich Town before joining current club Altrincham last summer.

Conor Grant (Jul 17 – Jan 18)

Midfielder Grant would join the club from Everton, making 19 appearances for the club before returning to Everton. He would join current club Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 2018.

Luke Offord (Jul 18 – Jun 19)

We looked at Offord’s career in the number 21 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Michael Nottingham (Jan 20 – May 20)

Defender Nottingham joined the Alex in January this year and would make 11 appearances for the club before returning to parent club Blackpool, who took up the option of a 12-month extension following impressing at the Alex.
