What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 20

Here are those players that have worn the number 20 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Peter Smith (Jul 99 – Jun 01)

The first player on the list is Smith who came through the Academy and would make 28 appearances for the first team before joining Telford United in the summer of 2001 following loan spells at Macclesfield Town and Doncaster Rovers. He would also play for Newtown in two spells either side of being at Rhyl before finishing his career at Colwyn Bay and retiring in 2007.

Steve Jones (Jul 01 – Jun 02)

We looked at Jones’ career in the number 9 column, he wore this number in his first season with the club.

Lee Bell (Jul 02 – Jun 03)

We looked at Bell’s career in the number 7 column, he would also wear the number in his first season with the club.

Allan Smart (Jul 03 – Jun 04)

Scottish striker Smart was next to wear the number, arriving from Dundee United in the summer of 2003. He would make 6 appearances for the club before leaving for MK Dons the following summer and would also play for Bury, Portadown, Burscough and Southport before retiring from playing in 2009. He was manager and briefly chairman at Daventry Town in 2014 and 2015.

Andy White (Jul 04 – Jun 05)

White would join the club on a permanent deal in the summer of 2004 (following a 2-game loan spell early in the 2002/03 season) and would make 24 appearances in his only season as an Alex player. He would join Notts County the following summer and would also play for Kidderminster Harriers, Stafford Rangers, Alfreton Town and Worksop Town before retiring from football in 2010.

Eddie Johnson (Jul 05 – Jun 06)

Johnson would join the club on loan from Manchester United for 2005/06 season, making 23 appearances for the club before he would join Bradford City on a permanent deal the following season. He would also play for Chester City before moving to America to play for Austin Aztex and Portland Timbers. Since retiring, he has managed Dundee’s Under-20 side.

Paul Bignot (Jul 06 – Jun 07)

Bignot came through the Academy set-up and made 26 appearances for the first-team before joining Kidderminster on a permanent deal in the summer of 2007  following a loan spell with the club. He would also play for Newport County, Blackpool, Plymouth Argyle, Grimsby Town, Keflavik in Iceland, Solihull Moors, Newport County and Barrow before joining current club AFC Telford United in the summer of 2018.

Mat Bailey (Jul 07 – Jun 08)

Striker-turned-defender Bailey joined the club in the summer of 2005 from Stockport County and would make 3 appearances for the club in the 3 seasons at the club. He would move to home-town club Northwich Victoria in the summer of 2008 and would also play for Hinckley United on loan twice, Eastwood Town, Nantwich Town in 4 separate spells, AFC Telford United twice, Stafford Rangers before joining current club Leek Town in 2017.

Shaun Miller (Jul 08 – Jun 09)

We also looked at Miller’s career in the number 9 column, he wore the number in his third season with the first-team squad.

Danny Shelley (Jul 09 – Jun 10)

We looked at Shelley’s career in the number 12 column, he wore the number in his second season with the first-team squad.

Carl Martin (Jul 10 – Jun 11)

We looked at Martin’s career in the number 15 column, he wore the number in his second season at the club.

Ollie Turton (Jul 11 – Jun 12)

We looked at Turton’s career in the number 2 column, he wore the number in his second and fourth seasons with the first-team squad.

Andy White (Jul 12 – Jun 13)

Full-back White was an Academy graduate but would leave the club without making an appearance for the first team, joining Nantwich Town in the summer of 2013 following a short loan spell there. He would spend 4 years with the Dabbers before following manager Phil Parkinson to current club Altrincham.

Ollie Turton (Jul 13 – Jun 14)

James Jones (Jul 14 – Jun 16)

We looked at Jones’ career in the number 8 column, he wore the number in his first two seasons as a first-team player.

Charlie Kirk (Jul 16 – Jun 19)

We looked at Kirk’s career in the number 10 column, he wore the number in his second through fourth seasons as a first-team player.

Josh Lundstram (Jul 19 – present)

Midfielder Lundstram has yet to make a first-team appearance for the club but has spent time on loan, he’s another that Artell has talked up during this off-season as a future first-team player. He is currently on loan at Altrincham as they look to gain promotion from the National League North.
