What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 33

Here are those players that have worn the number 33 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Ben Rix (Jul 99 – Jun 00)

We looked at Rix’s career in the number 12 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Stuart Tomlinson (Jul 01 – Jun 02)

We looked at Tomlinson’s career in the number 13 column, he wore this number in the second year of his scholarship deal.

Luke Varney (Mar 03 – Jun 03)

We also looked at Varney’s career in the number 12 column, he wore this number in his first three months with the club.

Eamon Zayed (Feb 04 – May 04)

Dublin-born Libyan international striker Zayed joined the club on loan from Bray Wanderers for the second half of the 03/04 season without making a first-team appearance. He would also play for Aalesunds, Drogheda United, Sporting Fingal, Derry City, Persepolis, Aluminium Hormozgan (the last 2 are Iranian clubs), Shamrock Rovers, Sligo Rovers, Sabah in Malaysia, Indy Eleven and Charlotte Independence before joining current club Chattanooga Red Wolves early last year.

Paul Bignot (Jul 04 – Jun 05)

We looked at Bignot’s career in the number 20 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Ross Turnbull (Aug 05 – Apr 06)

Goalkeeper Turnbull joined the club on loan from Middlesbrough, making 29 appearances for the club in his season with the club. He also played for Cardiff City, Chelsea, Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley and Leeds United before retiring from playing in the summer of 2017. He is currently goalkeeping coach at Hartlepool United, a position he’s held since March the following year.

Adam Warlow (Jul 06 – Jun 07)

Striker Warlow came through the Academy without making a first-team appearance before moving to Witton Albion in the summer of 2007. He would also play for Fleetwood Town before retiring in the summer of 2011.

Cedric Baseya (Nov 07 – Dec 07)

Striker Baseya joined the club on loan from Southampton, making 4 appearances in his month with the club. He also played for Lille, Le Havre, AS Cherbourg, Reading, Barnet, Lokomotiv Sofia and Monza before retiring from football in 2015.

Kelvin Mellor (Jul 09 – Jun 10)

We looked at Mellor’s career in the number 3 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Liam Nolan (Jul 12 – Jun 13)

We looked at Nolan’s career in the number 18 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Anthony Stewart (Nov 14 – Jun 15)

Defender Stewart joined the club, initially on loan from Wycombe Wanderers before making the move permanent in January. He would make 10 appearances for the club before rejoining Wycombe that summer, where he scored the first goal in the play-off final last month to send the Chairboys to the second tier for the first time ever.

Ryan Seager (Jul 15 – Jun 16)

Forward Seager joined the club on loan from Southampton, making 4 appearances for the club before rupturing his ACL. He would also play for MK Dons, Yeovil Town in two spells, Telstar in Holland, Havant & Waterlooville and Frome Town before joining current club Hungerford Town last month.

Kevin O’Connor (Aug 18 – Jan 19)

Left-back O’Connor would join the club on loan from Preston North End, making 10 appearances for the club. He would also play for Cork City and Waterford on loan from PNE before being released by the club this summer.
