What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 32

Here are those players that have worn the number 32 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Gareth Liddle (Jul 99 – Jun 00)

We looked at Liddle’s career in the number 27 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

David Vaughan (Jul 00 – Jun 02)

We looked at Vaughan’s career in the number 11 column, he wore this number in his first two seasons with the first-team squad.

Tom Betts (Jul 03 – Jun 04)

Defender Betts came through the Academy with the club without making a first-team appearance for the club, spending time on loan at IBV in Iceland. He moved to Leek Town after leaving the Alex before retiring from the game in 2005.

Keith Briggs (Aug 04 – Sep 04)

Defender turned midfielder Briggs joined the club on loan from Norwich City, making 3 appearances for the club in his month-long spell. He would also play for Stockport County, Shrewsbury Town, Mansfield Town, Stalybridge Celtic, Kidderminster Harriers for two spells, Halifax Town, Barrow before a return to Stalybridge as player/manager. He also managed New Mills, manager of Sheffield United’s Under-18s and had a spell as assistant at Southport but hasn’t been involved in the game since 2017.

Luke Rodgers (Jul 05 – Jun 06)

We looked at Rodgers’ career in the number 9 column, he wore this number in his first season with the club.

Shaun Miller (Jul 06 – Jun 07)

We also looked at Miller’s career in the number 9 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Elliott Bennett (Oct 07 – Jan 08)

Winger turned full-back Bennett joined the club on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, making 11 appearances for the club (including scoring a winner against Port Vale at their place). He would also play for Bury in two loan spells, Brighton & Hove Albion in two spells, Norwich City and Bristol City before joining current club Blackburn Rovers in January 2016, where he was appointed club captain for the 19/20 season.

Gary Roberts (Jan 08 – Mar 08)

Winger Roberts joined the club on loan from Ipswich Town, making 4 appearances in his two-month loan spell. He would also play for Huddersfield Town, Swindon Town, Chesterfield and Portsmouth before joining current club Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2017.

Alex Titchiner (Jul 09 – Jun 10)

Welsh striker Titchiner came through the Academy without making a first-team appearance for the club, spending time on loan at Chasetown and Colwyn Bay during that season. He would join the Welsh club on a permanent deal after being let go by the Alex, also playing for Chester in two spells, Witton Albion in three separate spells, Fleetwood Town, FC Halifax Town in two loan spells, Conwy Borough and Rhyl before joining current club Flint Town last summer. He has also been coach of youth teams at Crewe since 2014.

Jordan Brown (Feb 12 – Jun 12)

Left-back Brown joined the club on a short-term deal, making 7 appearances for the club. He would also play for Barnet, Bishop’s Stortford, Boreham Wood, Hemel Hempstead Town, Whitehawk, Dulwich Hamlet, Welling United, Concord Rangers and Canvey Island before joining current club East Thurrock United last summer.

Nathan Ellington (Jul 12 – Jun 13)

Striker Ellington joined the club on a short-term deal, making 8 appearances for the club at the end of the 12/13 season. He would move to Southport in that summer before retiring at the end of the year. He would sign for Cheshire Football League side Egerton in November 2017 before becoming their assistant in the summer of the following year.

Joe Howell (Jul 15 – Jun 16)

Midfielder Howell came through the Academy, making a couple of appearances for the club after spending time on loan at Rushall Olympic. He would also play for AFC Fylde and Halesowen Town before joining current club Whitchurch Alport in September last year.

Shaun Miller (Jul 17 – Jun 18)

As mentioned earlier, Miller’s career was covered in the number 9 column and he wore this number in this loan spell at the start of his second spell with the club.

Jamie Sterry (Jul 18 – Jun 19)

Right-back Sterry joined the club for two loan spells from Newcastle United in the 17/18 season as well as the following season, making 10 appearances across those two spells. He is currently a free agent after being released by the Toon this summer.
