What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 22

Here are those players that have worn the number 22 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Steve Foster (Jul 99 – Jun 02)

We looked at Foster’s career in the number 6 column, he wore this number in his second through fourth seasons with the first-team squad.

Stuart Tomlinson (Jul 02 – Jun 05)

We looked at Tomlinson’s career in the number 13 column, he wore this number in his second through fifth seasons with the first-team squad.

Paul Bignot (Jul 05 – Jun 06)

We looked at Bignot’s career in the number 20 column, he wore this number in his second season with the first-team squad.

Owain fon Williams (Jul 06 – Jun 07)

We looked at fon Williams’ career in the number 21 column yesterday, he wore this number in his second season with the first-team squad.

Colin Daniel (Jul 07 – Jun 09)

Daniel joined the club from Eastwood Town in the summer of 2007 with him making 17 appearances for the club before joining Macclesfield Town, initially on loan at the end of the 08/09 season before making the move permanently that summer. He would also play for Mansfield Town, Port Vale, Mansfield again on loan, Blackpool and Peterborough United before joining current club Burton Albion in January last year.

AJ Leitch-Smith (Jul 09 – Jun 10)

We looked at Leitch-Smith’s career in the number 10 column, he wore this number in his second season with the first-team squad.

Harry Davis (Jul 10 – Jun 11)

We looked at Davis’ career in the number 3 column, he wore this number in his second season with the first-team squad.

George Ray (Jul 11 – Jun 12)

We looked at Ray’s career in the number 5 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Harry Clayton (Jul 12 – Jun 13)

Forward Clayton was given the number 22 upon signing a professional deal with the club but wouldn’t make an appearance in his single season with the first-team squad. He would join Nantwich Town, Market Drayton Town, Stafford Rangers and Newcastle Town amongst others before rejoining the Dabbers (where he would coach at the Alex Soccer Centre as well) and now coaches at Everton in their Academy set-up.

George Evans (Oct 13 – Jun 14)

Midfielder Evans joined the club on loan from Manchester City in October 2013, making 25 appearances for the team before returning to the Premier League club. He would also play for Scunthorpe United and Walsall on loan before moving to Reading with him joining current club Derby County in the summer of 2018.

Fraser Murdoch (Jul 14 – Jun 16)

Striker Murdoch would have 2 seasons with the club at first-team level following graduating through the Academy, without making a first-team appearance in the summer of 2016. He would join York City on a short-spell later that year.

Alex Kiwomya (Jul 16 – Jun 17)

Forward Kiwomya joined the club on loan from Chelsea, making 39 appearances for the club before returning to Chelsea. He would sign for Doncaster Rovers that summer and would spend time on loan at Chesterfield and Chorley before leaving Donny this summer.

Josh Lundstram (Jul 17 – Jun 19)

We also looked at Lundstram’s career in the number 20 column, he wore this number in his first two seasons with the first-team squad.

Billy Sass-Davies (Jul 19 – present)

Centre-back Sass-Davies is another that came through the Academy and has made 4 appearances for the club so far, gaining plenty of experience in non-league football for Colwyn Bay, Leek Town, FC United of Manchester, Altrincham, AFC Telford United and Ashton United.
