Former Alex Players On The Move – January 2023

In this column, we’ll look at those former Alex players that have been on the move in the month of January as well as yesterday’s Transfer Deadline Day.

On Saturday 7th, midfielder Ashley Westwood left Burnley to join MLS club Charlotte FC. Ashley made 143 appearances between 2009 and 2012.

On Thursday 12th, midfielder Brad Walker left Port Vale to join Tranmere Rovers, he made 34 appearances between 2017 and 2019.

On the same day, forward Ryan Colclough moved from Altrincham to fellow National League side Chesterfield for an undisclosed fee, Ryan made 68 appearances for the Alex between 2012 and 2016. He replaced fellow Alex Academy alum George Cooper who left the Spirites by mutual consent on the same day, George made 142 appearances for the Alex between 2014 and 2018.

On Friday 13th, forward Mika Mandron left Gillingham by mutual consent, who he signed for last summer, and joined Motherwell on a free transfer. Mika made 85 appearances, scoring 24 goals for the Alex between 2020 and 2022.

On Monday 16th, goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo joined Austrian Bundesliga club Sturm Graz on loan for the rest of the season (link in German), he made 26 appearances for the club in the first half of the season.

On Friday 20th, midfielder Scott Robertson would join League 1 club Fleetwood Town from Celtic on a free transfer until the summer of 2025. Scott made 23 appearances, scoring twice for the Alex during a loan spell last season.

Deadline Day

Winger Charlie Kirk joined Burton Albion on loan from fellow League 1 club Charlton Athletic, Kirk made 206 appearances for the Alex between 2016 and 2021 as he was a key member of the 2020 League Two promotion squad.

Defender Toby Mullarkey moved from National League side Altrincham to League 2 club Rochdale for an undisclosed fee on an 18-month deal with the club having an option of a further year, Toby came through the Alex academy set-up but didn’t make a first-team appearance before being released in the summer of 2016.

Defender Anthony Stewart has left Aberdeen and joined League 1 club MK Dons on a loan deal until the end of the season, Anthony made 10 appearances for the club during the 2014/15 season.

Defender Sam Stubbs would leave League 1 Exeter City to join Bradford City in League 2 on a free transfer, he made 8 appearances for the Alex during a loan spell from Wigan in the first half of the 2017/18 season.
