Clayton Donaldson scored twice against his former club as Brentford ran out comfortable 5-0 winners against Crewe Alexandra at Griffin Park.

The Bees were already well in control by then, however, with Marcello Trotta earning them the lead just before the break and Adam Forshaw adding another straight after it.

Chelsea loanee George Saville then increased their advantage prior to the hour-mark and Donaldson netted his brace to complete the scoring.

Crewe goalkeeper Alan Martin gathered from Forshaw at an early free-kick while Trotta hoisted over after skipper Harry Davis had blocked. He soon threatened again but couldn’t beat the Scot from an angle.

Brentford continued to be on top and Forshaw drilled over, while Byron Moore had a reply deflected wide before Saville headed over and Martin kept out Trotta.

The hosts were rewarded just ahead of the interval with Trotta heading them into the lead from the edge of the area after Davis had initially cleared a free-kick.

That advantage was doubled straight after the break when Forshaw escaped and slotted in number two.

Ex-Alex forward Donaldson should then have converted when Jonathan Douglas’ deflected effort came back off an upright. But his moment was still to come.

A third goal duly arrived on 58 minutes as Saville avoided the attentions of on loan George Evans and curled beyond Martin.

Five minutes later Donaldson beat the offside trap from Douglas’ through ball for his first of the afternoon.

Substitute Vadaine Oliver headed at David Button in reply, until Bees’ own replacement Farid El Alagui rescued possession from Anthony Grant and released Donaldson for the fifth goal.

Oliver nearly grabbed himself a consolation inside the six-yard box, while Martin denied substitute Will Grigg at the other end.

Credit to Alex by a Bees’ fan- being outplayed, 5-nil down – but they still kept trying to play the right way. Good on ’em -it was almost (almost) a pity they didn’t get the consolation goal they were after right to the final whistle
