Second-half goals from Daniel Powell, the third straight game he’s scored in, and Ollie Finney were enough for Crewe Alexandra to come from behind at the Bescot Stadium yesterday against Walsall. Caolan Lavery gave the hosts the lead but the result sees the Alex move ahead of Exeter City into second place in the table.
Manager David Artell made one change from Tuesday night’s 2-0 home win against Leyton Orient as James Jones came into the team for Paul Green, who dropped down to the bench. Chris Porter (who has been out for the last 6 weeks) was also fit enough to be a substitute as was our new loan signing Stephen Walker, who joined from Middlesbrough on Friday.
The Saddlers took the lead on 15 minutes with Lavery finishing from close-range as the Alex struggled to impose themselves on the game in the opening period. The second half was a different story and the equaliser came 5 minutes after the break as an inswinging corner from Harry Pickering was glanced on at the near post by Perry Ng with Powell scoring from a yard out at the back post.
The winner came midway through the second half with a chipped through-ball from Ryan Wintle was nodded down by Charlie Kirk and, following a good touch, was fired past goalkeeper Liam Roberts by Finney from just inside the area.
Our next two games see home games against Oldham Athletic next Saturday before Crawley Town the following Tuesday.
What can we learn from this game?
Another game of two halves and another game where we’ve come from behind to get something out of the game (how many times have we said that so far this season?) with the total now being 22 points gained from losing positions. If I had a pound for every time that either had happened, then I’d have had enough to get the #Project250 paid for on my own.
Just imagine how many points we’d be on if we played as well as we can for both halves rather than for just (mainly) the second halves of games.
