Zac Williams’ first-half header saw Crewe Alexandra return to winning ways at Wetherby Road against Harrogate Town yesterday.
Manager Lee Bell made 2 changes from Tuesday’s 2-0 home defeat against Stockport County as Joel Tabiner and Elliott Nevitt replaced the injured Jack Powell and Courtney Baker-Richardson, the latter dropping down to the bench. Former Alex defenders Rod McDonald and Kayne Ramsay started for the hosts.
The game’s opening chance came in the 6th minute as George Thomson would have a shot deflected behind for a corner before Harvey Davies made a great save to deny Matty Daly 10 minutes later. The first Alex chance saw Chris Long have a shot saved by Mark Oxley on 21 minutes before the Scouse forward would shoot wide a few minutes later.
The goal came in the 32nd minute as a Mickey Demetriou long throw was allowed to get to the back post where Williams would head in at the back post from 6 yards out. Connor O’Riordan would have an effort that few over just before the hour-mark with substitute Baker-Richardson shooting straight at substitute keeper Lewis Thomas, the young keeper making his league debut.
The next couple of games see the Alex host Derby County in the FA Cup next Sunday (2:45 pm kick-off, live on ITVX) before hosting Notts County the following Saturday.
It was good to get back to winning ways after the defeat in midweek (continuing on the streak of winning each league game following a league defeat this season), getting our first back-to-back away wins in the league since April 2021.
