Second-half goals from substitute Kyle Wootton and Isaac Olaofe saw league leaders Stockport County defeat Crewe Alexandra at the Alexandra Stadium last night.
Manager Lee Bell made 1 change from Saturday’s 4-2 win at Crawley Town as defender Mickey Demetriou replaced the injured Joel Tabiner. Former Alex midfielder Antoni Sarcevic started for the visitors while Alex Academy product Nick Powell was not involved.
The game’s opening chance came in the 19th minute as Jack Powell’s cross was headed wide by Rio Adebisi before Louie Barry would go off for the visitors midway through a first half that saw both sides struggle to create too much.
The second half would see the visitors start well as Harvey Davies would deny Olaofe early on before the visitors took the lead in the 66th minute as a corner was taken short to Odin Bailey with his cross headed in by Wootton from close range. Substitute Elliott Nevitt would head wide from an Adebisi cross from the left moments after coming on before the lead would be doubled a minute from time as Wootton dispossessed Demetriou, playing in Olaofe to finish past Davies.
The next couple of games see the Alex travel to Harrogate Town on Saturday before hosting Derby County in the FA Cup on Sunday 5th November (2:45pm kick-off, live on ITVX).
The 14-game unbeaten home record has gone against a team that stepped up a level or two after the half-time break while the Alex couldn’t find that level in a disappointing performance. We missed a presence in midfield that could get on the ball, especially after Powell went off injured, with Thomas and Colkett not seemingly fit enough to come on to play in the midfield.
