We have committed suicide

Steve Holland revealed his frustration as two defensive errors were the Alex’s downfall in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at Luton.

The first team coach saw Danny Woodards’ error on the 4th minute punished before a rash challenge from Patrick Boyle gave Luton the penalty to wrap up the game with.

Holland also bemoaned the attack. despite Nicky Maynard notching up his 9th goal of the season, Holland felt a front three of Jones, Anyinsah and Maynard was pretty ineffective and requires a re-think.

Holland spoke to CreweAlex.net:

‘I thought we started the game fairly brightly but we found ourselves a goal down and with a bit to do after conceding a really disastrous goal.

‘We were finding it hard to build up from the front three without Tom Pope up there. Steve (Jones) was seeing a lot of the ball but was running with it and Nicky and Joe were finding it difficult to get into the game. That needs a re-think because they are three runners rather than the target man.

‘We needed some urgency and we found that bit of quality for our goal. Kenny Lunt played Nicky in and he took his goal well.

‘From then on it looked as though a point would not have been a disaster and we might have even snatched it. From a hard game, it would have been a good point but then we have committed suicide for the second goal.’

Crewe now face Southend on Saturday knowing that a defeat could well put them deep into the relegation zone should Gillingham win their two games this week – against Luton and Millwall.
