Crewe target Steve Mildenhall has elected to join Southend United by signing a 3 year deal with them.

The 30 year old shot stopper had been heavily linked with a move to Gresty Road over the past few months but has joined Southend due to their ambition matching his. Mildenhall confirmed in an interview on Southend`s official site that he rejected an approach from Crewe.

Southend`s current number one, Darryl Flahavan has yet to sign a new deal and could possibly move on with Championship sides interested in his services, so its quite possible that Mildenhall will go straight into the first 11 for Southend come the new season.

Crewe are thought to me close to signing another keeper however with former Derby keeper Ben Hinchliffe, and former Birmingham keepers Richard Kingson and Adam Legzdins being in the frame.

Just read on BBC website that Mildenhall had offers from both Yeovil and the Alex but has gone to Southend “as they have great plans to move forward”.

Reading between the lines, does that suggest our vision for the future doesn’t impress average League One ‘Keepers? Or is it just footballer talk for ” they offered me more money”? Makes me wonder.

Offered me more money, the chance to stay in the south and, let’s face it, the chance to play in a better team.
