I talk to Crewe Alexandra legend, Lee Bell about his time at Crewe, his current role as a coach and what the future holds for the Alex

Having grown up, coming through the Crewe ranks, how hard a decision was it for you to leave Crewe back in 2007?

When I left back then it was probably the right decision but a tough one. I wasn’t playing much and really struggled with an ankle injury, and there were better players ahead of me. In the end it worked out well for everyone.

And how did it feel to return back in 2010?

Coming back to Crewe was unreal. I never thought I’d get the chance to play for Crewe again. I was set to join a club in League One but then heard Crewe may be interested, and when I heard that, my mind was made up. We never discussed money or the length of the deal and I didn’t really tell my wife that I’d signed! I just couldn’t wait to get started.

Who were your best friends in the Alex squad, and how many are you still in touch with?

I’m in touch with quite a few of the lads whom I`ve played with over the years. Vaughany and Murph are my sons` godparents. I see Westy and Shaun Miller and obviously Kenny at footy.
There’s a load really (whom I`m still friends with), not sure they feel the same haha.

What was your best moment in a Crewe shirt?

The best moment was making my debut without a doubt, and playing in such a good team.
Then there the two promotions. On a personal note, being captain, having my son as mascot and winning that game.
How are you enjoying your new role back at Crewe in a coaching capacity?

I`m loving the role and I feel very privileged to be working at such a great club and academy. It`s great to be around top coaches and trying to pick up bits off each one of them. They`re a fantastic group to be around and they work long hours to keep improving.

It’s been a difficult last few seasons for Crewe. You`ve played for the club in League 2, League 1 and the Championship. Can you see them climbing back up the ladder?

It has and sometimes a setback can spark new life into things. I feel football is on the change in terms of smaller clubs achieving more success. Leicester, Burton, Accrington and in the Euros, Iceland, have shown that hard work, belief and playing without fear can get you to where you want to be. I’m sure there’s plenty of success in the future for the first team

Finally, is there anything you`d like to say to the Crewe fans?

Personally, I would like to thank the fans with how they treated me during my playing days. It was a place I loved going to on Saturday or Tuesday and if you put a shift in, no matter how you played the fans appreciate that.

Many thanks to Lee for his time. It was a privilege to be able to interview such a loyal servant to the club, and he was a pleasure to work with. Follow him on Twitter @leedbell7
