Is Gudjon Worthy Of A New Deal?

Tuesday’s win saw calls for Thordarson to be offered a long term deal at the club; a slight knee jerk reaction maybe?

It’s not to say that what Gudjon has done so far has been anything short of outstanding. He’s taken an under performing team with no confidence and turned them into world beaters, as well tightening up probably the worst defence in League One. I’m delighted he’s our manager.

So would it be jumping the gun to go and offer him a two or three year deal? Of course it would.

Just like it was insane that there were people out there who were beginning calls for his sacking after just three or four games, a long term contract two months into his reign seems a bit premature.

There is actually no official word on how long Gudjon’s contract actually is. The assumption is it’s 12 months at the very best but it’s most likely to be till June.

It’s a sensible deal by the club. It would have been impossible to commit to any manager beyond this season with relegation on the cards, things would naturally need reviewing in the summer.

Port Vale got caught out in 2008, bringing Lee Sinnott in on a two year contract only to realise they could be in the Blue Square Premier by the end of those two years. Sinnott probably left with a handsome pay out whilst Vale are struggling to recover.

Gudjon’s started well, certainly better than Sinnott, but let’s wait and see yet. We may not be so keen if we fail to win in March.

If I was in charge I’d leave any new contract for Thordarson till the summer at the earliest. He’s not yet completed his first task, and that’s to keep us up. If he does that of course a new deal should be waiting; relegation would require a thorough review of his performance but so far I would say he’s odds on to remain manager.

Besides, what is a contract these days? It rarely, if ever, keeps a manager at their club. If another club wants him and he wants to go then there’s nothing you can do and compensation is always minimal at this level.

Personal opinion is I don’t think a contract is all that important to Gudjon either. I don’t think he was as eager to get a job back in England as most managers and he’s taken this job because he wants it not because he needs it.

Let’s enjoy this good bit of form and let’s hope it continues and continues into next season. Who knows what it could take us?

And if a Championship club came calling for Thordarson’s services then so be it, a 3 year contract won’t put them off. It never does.

Still, it’s nice we’re back behind the Crewe Alex manager again!

(Vital poll result: Should Gudjon get a longer contract? Yes 85%, No 0%, Wait till the end of the season 15%)
