Former Player Scores In Heavy Defeat

|

A brace from Josh Gordon helped Barrow to a victory over Crewe Alexandra at Holker Street yesterday after former Alex striker Billy Waters opened the scoring for the hosts.

Manager Alex Morris made 2 changes from Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at AFC Wimbledon as Eli King and Bassala Sambou both came into the team for Oli Finney and Courtney Baker-Richardson, who both dropped down to the bench. Waters was not the only former Alex player in the Barrow team as former Alex captain George Ray also started for the hosts.

The hosts had the opening chance and goal of the game in the 8th minute as Waters would be unmarked and volleyed in a cross from Ben Whitfield at the back post before Joel Tabiner would go off injured and was replaced by fellow first-year pro Charlie Finney on 33 minutes. Tariq Uwakwe, now in midfield after the arrival of the younger Finney brother, would prod a Kelvin Mellor cross-cum-shot wide minutes later.

The lead would be doubled 2 minutes before the break with Whitfield getting his second assist, this time Gordon would find the bottom corner from 12 yards out before the third came after the break as Zac Williams would be caught in possession by Gordon with the former Nantwich Town striker firing across Arthur Okonkwo into the bottom corner on the hour-mark.

The next games for the Alex host two games this week, first Leeds United’s Under-21s in the final EFL Trophy group game on Tuesday before Leyton Orient play us in the FA Cup next Saturday.

What can we take out of this game?

Another disappointing performance summed up by the third goal, a mistake on the halfway line that was punished by a clinical finish inside the penalty area.

That said, there was another decent game for Okonkwo who made another couple of saves that kept the score down in the opening half.
