He’s only been here a week but could David be looking at succeeding Gudjon somewhere down the line?

It would be far from unusual. The choice to appoint Davis as assistant manager seems more like a Dario/Bowler choice than a Gudjon one. It could well have been a compromise in order for Gudjon to reshuffle his backroom staff and Dario/Bowler to keep some sort of control on the first team.

Davis is highly thought of around Cheshire, his success at Nantwich never went unnoticed, with many Alex fans taking the Dabbers on as their second team.

Having played over 140 games for Crewe during Dario’s first few years a manager in the 80’s, he was also talked about upon Steve Holland’s dismissal. However, having seen Holland struggle following a speedy promotion from Academy Manager to First Team Manager, maybe Dario and John Bowler have learnt their lesson.

Gudjon will not be tied down here for a massive amount of time, if anything he’s just another manager on the merry go round waiting till he’s bored… or sacked. A year or two as assistant to the Iceman could prime Davis for the top job – having learnt the basics at Nantwich, he’ll now get a look at the professional side of management, ready to eventually lead the Alex?

It’s something he seems to have hinted at today. Speaking to BBC Radio Stoke, Davis revealed:

‘It’s a chance to learn the ropes under Gudjon. I am ambitious but that’s for another day.

‘I am an ambitious person, but my priority is to work with Gudjon and be his support mechanism.

‘I want to work up to being a manager, to the highest point I can. I did that as a player and hopefully I can do the same as a manager.’

For now though, Gudjon’s the man and this coming season we’ll get to see what he’s really about.
