Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis was naturally disappointed not to see the game out at Doncaster Rovers.

“I cannot fault their effort but we just lacked a bit of quality” – Steve Davis

Defender George Ray earned the visitors an early lead but their opponents fought back in the second-half with goals from Dean Furman and, in the final minute, Richard Wellens.

“The players gave everything they had tonight,” Davis told Crewe’s official website. “I cannot fault their effort but we just lacked a bit of quality in the second half to see it through.

“I thought we played well in the first half but we couldn’t sustain it into the second half and we didn’t retain the ball well enough,” he added. “But we cannot be too harsh on them because they had done brilliantly to go on that little run.”

I think in the second half you were guilty of trying to hold onto what you had. I was worried every time you attacked us in the first half.
