Crewe are thought to be in talks with Morecambe defender David Artell having seemingly missed out on number one target Ryan Cresswell.

Bury’s Cresswell is expected to sign for Rotherham this week despite having good talks at Reaseheath training ground a few weeks back.

Desperate to improve a poor defence, Dario has turned his attentions to powerful Morecambe defender David Artell; the 29 year old is thought to have had talks with the Alex and could complete a move as early as this week.

The former Rotherham man has been in fine form for play-off losers Morecambe in the last year. Having been a mainstay of the Shrimps defence he has also managed to notch up an impressive eight goals from the back – including the winner in that 4-3 win for Morecambe and the last ever goal at Christie Park.

Having been at Morecambe for two years, as his current one year deal expiring at the end of this month, Artell is thought to be ready to reject the Shrimps’ offer of an extended contract and could decide to make the switch to Gresty Road.

Dario refused to name his man yesterday but confirmed to the club’s official website that he has indeed spoken to a second centre back and says he has now put it to both of his targets that the first to sign on the dotted line will become the Alex’s new star defender.

Meanwhile, we continue to be linked with Peterborough’s giant defender Exodus Geohaghon whilst The People report that Bradford captain Zesh Rehman is a target for Dario.
