Danny Woodards is doubt for Wednesday’s friendly against Derby County and could hand a chance to George Abbey (pictured, centre).

Woodards is complaining of a tight hamstring and looks a slight doubt to make Wednesday’s friendly at Gresty Road. The injury could hand George Abbey a chance for his debut at right back as he looks set to sign a one year deal with the club.

Dario Gradi told crewealex.net: ‘Danny should be okay, but he isn’t then George (Abbey) could play. It would give us a chance to have a real look at him. We know he could go in and do a job. He is experienced enough and we won’t have to start from scratch with him.’

Meanwhile, Derby look set to bring a mixed team on Wednesday despite reports that they’d only be sending a reserve/young team. The rumours circulated after Derby arranged a friendly for Tuesday night against Nottingham Forest, but Dario has been in touch and has been promised that some of the Premiership stars will be on show.

He told the official site: ‘With Derby playing Forest in the Brian Clough Trophy there was a rumour going around that they would not be bringing a strong team to Crewe,

‘I’ve spoken to Derby and they have assured me that they will be bringing a strong team. Billy (Davies) has been mixing his teams up during the pre-season to give everyone a game and I’m assured there will be more senior players against us than not.’
