Mellor Amongst Ex-Alex On The Move

There were a number of former Crewe Alexandra players that were on the move on Transfer Deadline Day yesterday including 3 Alex Academy Alumni players.

Kelvin Mellor, 30, has joined Carlisle United on a 12-month deal from Morecambe, He made 92 appearances for Crewe between 2008 and 2014 (including 2 wins at Wembley) before moving to Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 2014. He would also play for 2 years at both Blackpool and Bradford City before joining Morecambe last summer, making 40 appearances in all competitions in their promotion-winning campaign.

Tranmere Rovers signed two forwards with Nicky Maynard and Stephen Walker arriving to the club. Maynard, 34, played 67 times for the Alex in all competitions between 2005 and 2008 before signing for Bristol City for £2.25m. He would also play for West Ham United, Cardiff City, Wigan Athletic, MK Dons, Aberdeen, Bury before spending the last 2 seasons at Mansfield Town (he spent the final six months on loan at Newport County) and has signed a 12-month deal with Rovers.

Walker, 20, has been at Middlesbrough for the whole of his career, spending time on loan at MK Dons and Crewe Alexandra (playing 11 times for the Alex across 2 loan spells with the club) and has joined on a season-long loan.

Speaking of loanees from Middlesbrough, Nathan Wood has joined Hibernian on a season-long loan after the 19-year-old made 12 appearances for the Alex in the second half of last season.

Finally, Bristol Rovers have brought in a couple of faces that may be familiar to Alex fans, both on 12-month permanent deals. Left-back Junior Brown, 32, made one appearance for the Alex in his only season as a pro back in 2007/08 and has played for FC Halifax Town, Northwich Victoria, Fleetwood Town, Tranmere Rovers, Oxford United, Mansfield Town, Shrewsbury Town, Coventry City before joining Scunthorpe United in January 2020, initially on loan before signing permanently in the summer.

The other is midfielder Antony Evans who made 14 appearances in the second half of last season for the Alex on loan from Paderborn having already played for Everton, Morecambe and Blackpool earlier in his career.
