Former Crewe stopper Stuart Tomlinson helped lowly Newcastle Town defeat Premiership Stoke City in a pre-season friendly yesterday.

Released by the club earlier this summer, Chester born Tomlinson is still in search of a club and a run out for non-league Newcastle against Stoke was the perfect opportunity to put himself in the shop window.

A solid performance by Tommo allowed Newcastle to hold on to a fantastic 2-1 win over a strong Potters side, just a week after ourselves had thrashed Town 7-0. Whilst only a pre-season friendly, it marks the end of a 28 year undefeated run for Stoke in the said fixture.

Featuring for Stoke in the same game were Alex academy graduates Matthew Lund and Ben Marshall, both came on 10 minutes into the second half having completed their switch to the Potteries last week.

Meanwhile, a second, equally as strong Stoke team were beaten 2-0 at Nantwich Town.
