Still Work To Be Done

Although it seems the sun is shining over gresty road, after Crewe`s gap between them and the drop was cut to 4 points, there is still a long way to go for the Railwaymen to ensure league 1 survival.
After missing out on all 3 points at home to Bristol Rovers, Crewe will be looking to extend the gap between themselves and the relegation zone at home to Leeds United on Saturday, as Crewe play the first of 3 games in a week against top 6 sides. The weekend fixture will be followed by a midweek trip to high flying and free scoring Mk Dons and a fourth fixture of the season against Millwall, who Crewe narrowly missed out to in Gudjon Thordasons first home game as Crewe boss.
After a tough week Crewe will then have to wait till the Saturday for their next fixture, something the squad won`t be used to, after 5 straight Tuesday nights. The week will give Thordason plenty of time to get his squad ready for the biggest game in a long time for the railwaymen as they travel to Swindon. Some fans have already labeled this as a make or break game. It might not be as simple as that, but if Crewe want to get to the required points total of 51-52 points that many are predicting will ensure survival, a win at the county ground is a must.
By the time the Easter period is reached things should look a lot more clearer as to what the Alex need to do survive, as Crewe play two of the last 5 remaining games in quick succession, a home game against Hartlepool on Easter Saturday and a trip to promotion hunting Oldham on bank holiday Monday.
After the Easter fixtures, the Alex will face bottom of the league Cheltenham town at the Alexandra stadium. Cheltenham themselves could already be relegated and could also of slipped into administration by the time the sides meet. 3 points will have to be the minimum for Crewe if they are to play League One football next season.
A Friday night away day at local rivals Stockport County will provide the last away game of the season for the Alex`s loyal travelling fans. This looks to be a tough fixture on paper, after county`s 3-0 triumph in Dario Gradi`s first game back at gresty road after Steve Holland`s sacking but Crewe will provide a much sterner test at Edgely Park.
The final game of the season will see soon to be promoted Leicester City come to town. With the foxes set to be in party mode, Crewe will hope they too can be joining in the celebrations with survival.
It isn`t the easiest run in Crewe could of asked for but the side has already shown they can beat anyone on their day. With ten points the estimated number required for safety, the games against Swindon, Hartlepool and Cheltenham will all need to provide 3 points and with Crewe having already shown they are more than capable with competing with the sides in and around the top 6, the games against Leeds, Millwall and Stockport should see Crewe complete the miracle turnaround under Gudjon Thordason and secure League One football in South Cheshire for another season.
