Second-Half Collapse Sees Another Defeat

|

Second-half goals from Callum Johnson, Danny Andrew and Ged Garner saw Fleetwood Town defeat Crewe Alexandra at Highbury yesterday.

Manager David Artell made six changes from our previous game, a 2-0 home win against Wigan Athletic in the EFL Trophy with Will Jaaskelainen returning in goal with Rio Adebisi, Luke Murphy, Scott Robertson, Scott Kashket and J’Neil Bennett also coming into the team.

The opening chance of the game came in the 3rd minute with Adebisi having an effort that curled wide before Will Jaaskelainen would make a double save 10 minutes later from Andrew and Callum Camps. The Finnish stop-stopper would also deny Ryan Edmondson before Callum McFadzean and Robertson would have wayward efforts for the Alex. Andrew would hit the post with a free-kick in first-half stoppage time.

The hosts would hit the post again just after the break with Garner receive the ball short from a corner before they would take the lead just before the hour with Johnson heading in a corner from Harrison Biggins. They would double the lead in the 72nd minute with Andrew’s free-kick going in off the post after a foul that saw Oli Finney pick up a yellow card before Garner would add the third in stoppage-time on the counter from substitute Callum Morton’s cross.

Our next couple of games see the Alex host Sunderland on Tuesday before a trip to Wycombe Wanderers next Saturday.

What can we take out of this game?

We’re now a quarter of the way through the season and it’s hard to see anything other than a relegation scrap for the rest of the season (and time will see whether we have the fight in the squad or not). One positive from the game is Will Jaaskelainen making a number of saves during the game but there are problems in front of him.
