Normal Service Resumed

Apologies for the inactivity in the past week, as a week’s stay in Cheshire has meant that I haven’t been able to update the site from my London base during the past week. That inactivity refers to the site, though the same could be said of Crewe’s transfer activity during my absence.

Our attacking inadequacies have been exposed in the last three friendlies, with none of our players finding the net. The prolonged saga involving a French trialist called Jose Da Veiga proved fruitless, apart from a bottle of wine sent to Dario as an apology for the striker’s no show. The recent friendlies have been disappointing, with Crewe’s impotence up front contributing a couple of lacklustre games.

Liverpool were the visitors last Saturday, and the five time European Champions were surprisingly disappointing. I had expected them to dictate the game with ease, and their defence to nulify anything we could produce. In honesty, it was our attacking players who nulified our attempts, with the final ball consistently poor. A wonderful goal from Liverpool lit up the occasion, with Robbie Fowler’s classy backheel enabling Craig Linfield to finish with aplomb. Fowler’s physical attributes restricted his influence, as the experienced forward produced a performance similar to that of Maradona in Soccer Aid – some classy touches but unable to exert his talent fully due to physical inadequacies. Despite this, he still outshone our forwards.

Liverpool could blame their poor performance on the absence of their World Cup stars. Unfortunately, we don’t have any World Cup stars to return, so there are few excuses for our inadequate display at home to Wolves.

Personally, I don’t consider pre-season results to be of any importance, especially when we were playing Liverpool and an impressive Wolves side. However, the performances were concerning and improvements will need to be made if we are to make an impression in League One.
