Substitute Chris Porter would score a stoppage-time penalty to give Crewe Alexandra a point at Rotherham United’s New York Stadium yesterday after Oliver Rathbone had given the hosts the lead early in the second half. The hosts would lose Wes Harding to two yellow cards, the second of which led to the penalty.
Manager David Artell made three changes from Tuesday’s 3-1 home defeat against Morecambe with Billy Sass-Davies and Luke Offord coming into the back 3 while captain Luke Murphy returned to the midfield as Josh Lundstram dropped down to the bench and both Terell Thomas and J’Neil Bennett missed out, the latter due to illness. Former Alex loanee Dan Barlaser started for the hosts.
The opening chance of the game came in the 6th minute with Will Grigg missing the target for the hosts before Luke Murphy shot straight at Viktor Johansson midway through the first half.
The opening goal of the game came in the 54th minute as Donervon Daniel’s clearance was charged down by Rathbone with the midfielder finishing into the bottom corner with half-time substitute Harding going into the book in the 74th minute before he would receive his marching orders after dragging down Porter as he looked to head home a left-wing cross – the veteran forward sending Johansson the wrong way from 12 yards.
Our next couple of games see the Alex travel to Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday before hosting Cambridge United next Saturday.
What can we take out of this game?
It was very much a smash-and-grab if we’re being totally honest with the reliable nature of Chris Porter from the penalty spot (it has to be getting towards 15 straight penalties that he’s scored for the club if it’s not already there – pretty certain that he’s not missed one for us since joining the club).
