Gnahoua Double Sees Shrimps Defeat Alex

|

A goal in both halves from Arthur Gnahoua saw Morecambe defeat Crewe Alexandra at the Alexandra Stadium last night. Adam Phillips opened the scoring for the visitors while Mika Mandron scored the Alex consolation.

Manager David Artell made one change Saturday’s 2-0 home win against Burton Albion with Josh Lundstram replacing the injured Luke Murphy while Oli Finney returns to the bench. Former Alex loanee Greg Leigh started for the visitors.

The opening goal of the game came in the 8th minute with Leigh’s low cross turned in by Phillips from inside the 6-yard box before the visitors would double the lead 20 minutes as a similar cross from the right side was turned in by Gnahoua. J’Neil Bennett would cut in from the left and force a save out of Kyle Letheren in the visitors’ goal a minute before half-time with Callum Ainley also having an effort saved by the keeper.

The Alex would get back into the game 4 minutes after the break with Rio Adebisi’s cross was turned in by Mandron with the French forward teeing up Ainley in the 64th-minute. Mandron would force another save out of Letheren with 8 minutes to play before Gnahoua would get his second of the evening a couple of minutes later from Kris Stockton’s through-ball.

Our next couple of games see the Alex travel to Rotherham United on Saturday before making the long trip to Plymouth Argyle next Tuesday.

What can we take out of this game?

We gave away a couple of soft goals and put ourselves in a position where we had to go and chase the game against a team that were prepared to sit deep and make it hard for us. The first three of the goals were similar, low crosses to the back post with the attacking player under little pressure, with the Shrimps late goal looking offside from my vantage point as the through-ball was played through – either way, it’s a tough result to take against a team that we should be looking to beat if we want to improve on last season’s finish.
