Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis believes that goalkeeping coach Steve Phillips’ training ground influence is starting to really make a difference.

“It’s a specialised position and they need different drills” – Steve Davis

Davis considers a specialist goalkeeping coach as a very important role within the club and in 34-year-old Phillips reckons they have a fine mentor for both Alan Martin and Ben Garratt to look up to.

“Steve’s very good, very impressive. He’s very demanding,” Davis told This is Staffordshire. “A goalkeeping coach is important. It’s a specialised position and they need different drills.

“The three of them go out before everyone else to work through routines and work very hard before they join in with the rest of the group,” he added. “It has helped Ben to be involved with the seniors. I think it’s helped Alan progress as well and hopefully they will keep getting better.”
