Crewe Alexandra have announced that former international goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has joined the club on an initial month-long deal following the injury to Tom Booth in Saturday’s game at Tranmere Rovers.

Westwood, 39, started his career at Manchester City without making a first-team appearance before moving on to Carlisle United in 2004. After 4 seasons with the Cumbrians, he would spend 3 seasons with both Coventry City and Sunderland (being coached by Fred Barber during the latter) before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 2014 and spending 7 seasons with the Owls. He spent the final couple of months of the 21/22 season with Queens Park Rangers and has been without a club since although he has been training with the Alex on and off since.

Westwood has also made 21 appearances for the Republic of Ireland’s senior team between 2009 and 2017.

What will Westwood bring?

He’s an experienced goalkeeper (having made over 500 appearances in his club career) and will provide competition with Harvey Davies over the coming weeks, if not be between the sticks at some point.
