Former Alex Players On The Move – August & Deadline Day 2023

In this column, we’ll look at those former Alex players who have been on the move in the month of August as well as the Transfer Deadline Day on Friday.

On Friday 4th, League 2 club Swindon Town completed the signing of midfielder Tariq Uwakwe on a 3-year deal. He made 48 appearances, scoring 1 goal in all competitions for the Alex in the last 18 months after signing from Chelsea.

On Wednesday 9th, League 1 side Reading completed the signing of goalkeeper David Button on a 2-year deal. He made 10 appearances for the Alex in a loan spell during the 2009/10 season.

On Saturday 19th, National League South club Hemel Hempstead Town completed the signing of forward Daniel Powell. He played 60 times for the Alex, scoring 12 goals across the 19/20 and 20/21 seasons.

On Tuesday 22nd, League 1 side Bolton Wanderers completed the signing of goalkeeper Jack Flint on an initial 12-month deal. He would be released after his scholarship this summer without making a first-team appearance for the Alex.

On Thursday 24th, League 1 club Oxford United completed the signing of left-back Greg Leigh from Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee. He made 42 appearances for the Alex during a loan spell in the 2014/15 season.

Deadline Day:

League 1 club Shrewsbury Town completed the signing of midfielder Ryan Finnigan on a season-long loan. Finnigan made 16 appearances for the Alex in the second half of last season.

League 2 Wrexham signed two former Alex loanees as goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and midfielder George Evans joined on loan from Arsenal and permanently from Millwall respectively. Evans made 25 appearances, scoring 1 goal during the 13/14 season while Okonkwo made 26 appearances in all competitions last season.
