Fon Williams Signs For Stockport

Owain Fon Williams has signed for Stockport County this afternoon after rejecting Crewe’s offer of a new contract.

A compensation fee will now need to be agreed for the Welsh U-21 keeper between Crewe and Stockport otherwise it will head to a tribunal. The fee, however, is unlikely to be anything over £100,000 overall due to Fon’s lack of first team appearances.

In his five years at Crewe William never played a first team game, despite links to the likes of Bolton. He revealed earlier this summer that this is part of the reason for him leaving, as well as revealing that he couldn’t trust the club having been offered the number shirt following the departure of fellow keeper Ben Williams.

It was thought that Williams would make the break into the Championship after strong rumours of interest from Swansea City but the Gwynedd born keeper chose our Cheshire rivals after speaking to Wales team mate and former Hatters loanee keeper Wayne Hennessey.

Fon was offered a new contract earlier in the summer with the promise of being number one if he signed, but following the arrivals of Adam Legzdins and Steve Collis it made it all the more certain Williams would leave.

It now looks like the first most Crewe fans will see of Williams will be when he lines up against the Alex next season.

So, Alex lads and lasses, what are your thoughts about Owain. One for the future and not ready for L1? I confess to knowing nowt about him and not sure if he will be our No.1 choice.

  • Dink. says:

Definitely one for the future. Not sure many could tell you with much confidence if he’s good enough for L1 though – we’ve barely seen him! From what I have seen though he looks OK enough and could probably hold his own without setting the league alight.

jamiekilgannon1 – You cheeky bugger! You also say on your forum that it is a step backwards for him – how are you a bigger club than us in any way? I would say it’s a step forward more than anything.

  • Dink. says:

    Step forward my arse.

  • jamiekilgannon1 says:

    step forward your a clown u r

wow u must be so proud with your signing. top class. my arse. your gonna struggle again this season with your 4,000 fans. and no maynard

  • scfcsam says:

“Step forward my arse.” “Your a clown u r.” Why is a step backwards? We have bigger crowds than you, arguably better players, and we are on our way up whereas you only just stayed up by the skin of your teeth. Also, I find it quite amusing to be called a clown by someone who types in text talk.

It’s not a step forward or backwards. It’s an average move for a similar deal he was offered here.

It’s easy to say you’re on your way up after a successful season in the division below us. You got up through the play-offs, lost your best striker and have made some pretty average signings. You’ll be keeping us company in the lower half I’m afraid.

You talk as if you’re a bloody sleeping giant. You’re just another average League One side, if that. Same as us.

  • scfcsam says:

My point being – it’s certainly not a step backwards. You are no bigger than us. Your an average L1 side, and we are as well. At the moment. 😉

Dont talk *********, we’ll let the players decide that but easily 4-0, 5-0 😉

  • scfcsam says:

LOL. Obviously excluding Maynard, but I meant we probably have better younger players. The average age of our squad is 21. A lot of our younger players will end up in the top half of the Championship, maybe some like Rowe in the Premiership. See ya next season fellas. 😉

  • Dink. says:

Yeah, our youngsters never make it. 🙁

  • jam_jar24 says:

haha the one thing you cant argue with is that crewe have better youngsters. Look were people we had have got and then look at yours. Says it all
