The first episode of our new series sees us interview Alex fan Rebecca Addis about the upcoming season.
Last season was obviously very disappointing for the Alex. What’s your take on it?
I believe relegation has been a long time coming. In the 2 previous seasons before last season we survived by the skin of our teeth. I think it was too much to ask for 3rd time round.
Manager Steve Davis has come in for a lot of criticism over the last few seasons. Davis in or out?
I remain firmly in the Davis out campaign. I think at times he has looked clueless on the sidelines and I don’t see him being able to take the team forwards. I would love to be proven wrong however.
What have you thought of the way the squad has been shaping up so far during pre season?
I have only attended one pre-season game so far, which was Nantwich on Tuesday. I believe it was a good performance, however it is always hard to judge on these games.
Who’s been the best signing?
Ryan Lowe is the best signing for me. He has been involved in football for a long time and therefore has the vital experience needed to bring on many of the younger players. Whilst I think he has a few seasons left in him, after his footballing career I would like to see him be given a coaching role at the Alex.
Where would you look to strengthen?
Midfield is an area in which we are desperately in need of strengthening. We lack any sort of strength or experience, which many other teams in League 2 have in this area.
Who do you think our best player will be this season?
Jon Guthrie was a real stand out performer last season and I think he will shine again this season. I would like to see him become more vocal in order for our defence to not ship as many goals as it did last season!
Who do you think will be our most surprising player?
I believe Callum Saunders will surprise a few people this season, myself included. He seemed to have a good work rate during the Nantwich game, although it didn’t always work out for him. His main weakness would be his physical strength, as he can he pushed off the ball too easily.
Finally, how do you think we’ll fare this season?
League 2 can be a very tough league to complete in and the drop to the Conference will be hard to avoid as many of the players may have a losing mentality after last season. Obviously I would love to see the Alex flying at the top of the league however I believe a mid table finish would be more realistic.
