Having rejected Preston`s initial bid of £400, 000, Crewe manager Dario Gradi has said he values outgoing defender Billy Jones at a million pounds.

Jones, who signed a four-year deal at Preston earlier in the week, cannot officially become a PNE player unless his new and old clubs agree a fee or a tribunal sets it.

Crewe chairman John Bowler is keen to agree a fee, having been stung at tribunals before, where as Alex manger Dario Gradi would rather risk a tribunal for the former England youth international.

Having played over 140 first team games for Crewe, Gradi believes a tribunal maybe the best option, and the panel will look favourably on Jones` statistics so far as a footballer at the Alex.

Chairman John Bowler isn`t so sure though and is keen to strike a deal, which if it happens, is likely to be in between the two clubs valuations. Bowler who is liasing with the Preston chairmen over the deal is likely to have the final say, as Gradi has admitted what happens is up to the Crewe board.
