Crewe look set to sign Nantwich Town’s Matty Freeman on an Academy scholarship after he impressed in a one month trial.

Freeman, 16, has been playing for Crewe’s Under 16’s in his time at the club and scored twice in an impressive performance against Liverpool on Saturday.

Matty is described as a pacey winger with bags of potential and although Crewe would be well within their rights to have poached him from their local neighbours, Technical Director Dario Gradi has negotiated a fee with Nantwich chairman Clive Jackson and boss Steve Davis.

Dario told crewealex.net, ‘Just because the rules mean we could take their player, we wouldn’t contemplate doing that. Nantwich have nurtured the lad, so they deserve some compensation for that’.

Freeman will join Crewe on a full time basis in the summer and is another exciting prospect to join the Crewe Academy.
