Crewe Alexandra have signed former Birmingham City ‘keeper Adam Legzdins for free on a two year deal. The 21 year old becomes Crewe’s first signing of the summer, and hopefully the first of many.

Legzdins was only recently linked ahead of other keepers, such as his former Birmingham team mate Richard Kingson, but the news first broke on the Vital Crewe Message Board .

Having seen Ben Williams leave the club this summer and being snubbed by Oldham’s Greg Fleming and Southend’s Steve Mildenhall, the goalkeeping position was turning into a problem area. Whilst rookie Owain Fon Williams could still sign his contract extension, Steve Holland has been working on the grounds that his only available keeper for next season was Stuart Tomlinson – who is sidelined till the end of the year.

Legzdins joins having been recently released by Birmingham City, whose academy he came through. He never managed a game for Birmingham and most of his experience comes from two loan spells at Halifax Town over the past three years. Last season he played 25 games for the Shaymen. He’s also had loan spells at Oldham Athletic and Macclesfield Town.

Legzdins, who can play for either England or Latvia national sides, is likely to become number two ‘keeper at the Alex as Steve Holland continues his search for a more experienced number one.
