Preston’s defeat in the play-offs tonight means we miss out on a potential windfall this summer.

The Lancashire club lost to Sheff Utd in the play-off semi-final second leg at Bramhall Lane tonight, a Greg Halford goal separating the two teams on the night.

It will have been a game Gudjon and chairman John Bowler will have watched with interest, if Preston had gone all the way and won promotion to the Premier League it would have landed us a lovely £250,000.

As part of the deal that took Billy Jones to Deepdale two years ago, Preston will be required to pay out if they reach the Premier League whilst Billy is their player.

North End have already paid £750,000 for Jones after all his appearance based fees were met whilst we’ll also be entitled to 20% of any future fee for Jones should Preston sell him.

It’s a minor blow to the Alex. The money would have come in pretty useful for Gudjon, who’s admitted the budget to rebuild his squad is nowhere near the mega money that Steve Holland splashed out just 12 months ago.
