Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Steve Phillips is already pushing hard to displace Alan Martin after returning to full training.

“I am not happy sitting in the stands I want to play” – Steve Phillips

The 34-year-old hasn’t appeared yet this season after requiring knee surgery in late August but is expected back in the squad for the weekend trip to Walsall.

On his last appearance, Phillips kept a clean-sheet against Cheltenham Town in the play-off final victory at Wembley back in May.

“I’ll be ready for the Walsall game if selected in the squad,” he told the Crewe Chronicle. “I am not happy sitting in the stands I want to play and I am getting my sharpness back.”

However, the shot-stopper who has previously seen service with both Bristol clubs and is also currently coaching at Gresty Road concedes he has a real challenge on his hands to oust his in-form deputy.

“Alan has done exceptionally well and I’m prepared to wait my turn,” Phillips continued. “If he is playing well and doing the business week in, week out, I’m happy with that.

“I get on really well with Al and he knows the score – there’s one place for two goalies. But I am happy he is playing well because that means I am doing my job as coach.”
