Crewe Alex: Loweing, Loweing, Gone

I was really disappointed to read that veteran forward Ryan Lowe has returned to Bury as a player coach. However, it doesn’t come as a huge shock. We received an approach from the Shakers previously, as they looked to Ryan to replace sacked manager David Flitcroft.

We were all pleased to see that Crewe quickly rebuked their interest. However, following the sacking of our own manager: Steve Davis, and subsequent appointment of former Alex defender Dave Artell as manager, Lowe’s future has looked uncertain.

He publicly admitted his confusion at not being spoken to about the manager’s role. I can only speculate here: I think he may well have made some sort of informal gentleman’s agreement with the club that he would continue on here as a coach, and as such accepted Crewe’s refusal to let him go to Bury as he felt he’d have a chance to coach here… especially as Steve Davis continued to worry fans with poor results.

I really like Ryan and I wish him all the best. Part of me wonders whether this move is purely opportunistic, and that I should be annoyed with him. However, part of me is just inclined to think that the club messed him around.

Either way, we’ve messed this one up a bit. He’s reportedly going for free. So, we’ve lost one of our best players… for free. This is great.

Maybe Dave has a plan up his sleeve. We’re certainly going to need a replacement.

The question is whether we look to loan some fresh blood from the higher leagues, polish a diamond in the rough from non-league, or try to sign an experienced but albeit slightly dodgy older attacker.

We’ll have to see. For now, though, thanks for your hard work Ryan. I wish you stayed and saw this season through.
