&headerbacNotts County manager Steve Cotterill says his side deserved the three points yesterday after beating Crewe 1-0 at Gresty Road.

A Mike Edwards header after poor marking at a set piece six minutes into the first half was enough to secure a vital three points for the Magpies.

Whilst the Alex were on top for big periods of the game actual chances were few and far between with Shaun Miller having just about our only shot on target when he forced Kasper Schmeichel into a spillage from 20 yards out.

County will feel as though they should have taken the lead before half time when they were awarded a soft penalty after a foul by Chris Stokes inside the area, helped along by some minor dramatics from the County player. Steve Phillips was more than equal to the resulting kick.

The game descended into handbags when Luke Rodgers squared up to Ashley Westwood in the last five minutes, both players receieved a red card as all players and staff from both sides got involved.

Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Nottingham that those last five minutes overshadowed a good game of football but he was perhaps wrong in bring Luke Rodgers on for the remaining 20 minutes of the game.

‘The last five minutes will overshadow the game.

‘I toyed with whether I brought Luke Rodgers on or not, he’s been ill with the flu all week and in hindsight it was the wrong decision.

‘I know it was a 1-0 game today but we deserved to win without a shadow of a doubt. We created the more clear cut chances and whilst Crewe play very good football I thought we played excellent today.

‘It was a tough game.’
