Commitment and desire wasn’t there

It’s safe to say Thordarson wasn’t too happy with the way his team crumbled to a 5-1 defeat at Northampton today.

Speaking to the official site Thordarson was unhappy at the lack of ‘commitment and desire’ shown in the first half following Julien Baudet’s red card, saying the players have let everyone down.

”As professional footballers you cannot even think about conceding goals like we did, let alone do it out on the pitch. It was shocking and then to lose a man as well meant we didn’t have much of a chance after conceding those two goals.

”I thought the red card was justified. At the time I thought the referee was right, it was a professional foul and now Julien will be suspended for Tuesday night. I will have a look at it again, but I’m sure the referee was right.

”Credit to the players in the first half to come back from such a dreadful start and get a goal back. The commitment and desire we spoke about during the week and then again at half-time was not there in the second half. I felt a few of the players were feeling sorry for themselves and gave up too easily and that won’t be acceptable.

”The players have let everyone down today. There were a number of fans here today, supporting us and they will be disappointed with the way we performed in the second half.”

And so on we go. Thordarson did not sound a happy man and rightly so, but at least he may now see that the rest of the season lies on how well he does in the transfer market over the next week or so. The defence were embarrassed by an extremely average League One side, it’s time for a complete overhaul in that area of the pitch and there’s no point in waiting till the summer.

It’s looking increasingly bleak for you. I think Thordarson was a strange appointment, are you happy with him?

Still early days but everything he’s done so far has got the thumbs up. Got to work the transfer market well in the next week or so if we’re in with a chance of staying up. Having said that, I don’t think his future beyond the end of the season rests on survival, depends how he shapes the club between now and May.
