Clean Sheet Is Nice But Can We Score Yet?

Both defences were on top as Cambridge United and Crewe Alexandra had a goalless draw at the Abbey Stadium last night.

Manager David Artell made 1 change from Friday night’s defeat at Tranmere Rovers with Shaun Miller coming into the team for Charlie Kirk as part of the front 3. Kirk dropped down to the bench where he was joined by Alex Nicholls and Nicky Hunt, those two in for Owen Dale and Jamie Sterry in the matchday 18.

The opening chance of the game came in the 9th minute with Callum Ainley forcing Cambridge keeper Dimitar Mitov into a save from 30 yards before the hosts first chance saw centre-back Greg Taylor heading a corner wide of the goal. More Alex chances saw Porter produce another save from Mitov then Ainley put a great ball into the middle that beat everyone before Miller should have opened the scoring from close range but fired over the bar.

The second half produced more of the same with Ainley shooting over from just outside the area before George Ray picked up his 10th caution of the season, meaning that he misses the next 2 games through suspension. Porter missed a sitter after good work from substitute Jordan Bowery before fellow sub Tom Lowery’s cross was kept out by a couple of defenders.

We host Crawley Town on Saturday before a trip to Mansfield the following Saturday.

What have we learnt from this game?

It’s another game of late where we have been unable to take chances but we’ve left with a draw due to the opposition not creating much of their own. Whilst Crawley sit in the bottom third of the league, Ray’s 2 game suspension also covers the away game against 3rd-placed Mansfield where we need to be defensively solid to get anything out of that game seeing as we are unable to get many goals at the other end.
