Boyle Disaster Ends Run

A disastrous performance from Patrick Boyle saw Crewe beaten 2-1 at Kenilworth Road today. The Everton loanee was put at fault for Luton’s winner as Crewe failed to emulate their last three performances that had seen them unbeaten.

The Hatters took the lead as early as the 11th minute when a mix up between Woodards and Williams gave the ball to Luton’s Matthew Spring, who fired it into the back of the net from all of 35 yards.

The Alex failed to find their game for the rest of the first half as Luton has most of the chances.

At half time it looked unlikely that a equaliser would come but a bright start to the second half was topped off on the hour mark when Nicky Maynard broke free of the Luton defence to send home his 9th goal of the season.

Anyinsah, in for the injured Pope, Steve Jones and Maynard all had chances after the goal to put Crewe into the lead but all came to nothing.

Disaster then struck 12 minutes from time when Boyle hestitated inside the area and in his attempts to get the ball back brought down Luton’s Ryan Charles. The referee had no hestitation in giving a penalty and Matthew Spring slotted home his second of the game.

Luton played out the game with confidence, not giving the Alex much of a sniff, and the Hatters could have had another goal or two on any other day. The defeat ends a run of five unbeaten away from home.

It, at least, doesn’t do much damage on the table. The Alex still have a four point gap over Gillingham in the final relegation spot – and Steve Holland can hope Luton do a job on Tuesday night for Gillingham’s game in hand.

Millwall remain just one point ahead of us after a surprise 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth, who are now nine points off the Alex, whilst Cheltenham seem to be escaping it after a 1-1 draw against Northampton.
