I speak to former Alex man Billy Waters ahead of Saturday when we face off against his new team: Cheltenham Town

1. Billy you were an integral part of the Cheltenham side that won the Vanarama National League last season. What was it like to be part of such a successful campaign?

It was a fantastic year of football last season. Obviously to win as champions was the icing on the cake. I loved every minute of it and if I could relive the day we won the league, I definitely would.

2. And you`ve been in good form so far this season. How are you finding life in League 2?

Yeah so far I’ve really enjoyed this season. I’m keen to get as many goals as possible.

3. What role have you found yourself playing in at Cheltenham?

My game since moving to Cheltenham has changed massively, I’ve found myself playing a striker’s role now and I’m really enjoying playing the position.

4. What was it like to be told you weren`t going to be offered a new contract and subsequently having to move away from the club you grew up at?

No player wants to be released, but it’s part of football. I was sad that I had to leave but was also excited for a change and to move somewhere different. I’m really enjoying myself down here so things turned out well for me.

5. How many of your old team mates are you still in touch with?

Yeah my best mate Jon Guthrie and me keep in touch everyday. Obviously I still keep in touch with the other lads too… Turts, George Ray, Coops, Saunders etc. I always catch up with James Collins when I see him too which is good, I always rated him as a coach.

6. Finally, is there anything you`d like to say to the Alex fans?

Crewe Alex fans have always been nothing but kind to me and when I was released it was so reassuring to see so many of them surprised and disappointed to see me go. When we played Crewe earlier on in the season I got a lot of nice comments on Twitter and Instagram too. It means a lot that they’re pleased to see me doing well.

Many thanks to Billy for his time. I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing him all the best for this season, apart from when he faces off against us!
