The forgotten man of Crewe Billy Jones has been linked with a surprise move to League One Southend. But then it is from the Daily Mirror.

The tabloid are reporting that Southend are showing an interest in the former Exeter left back with a view of a permanent deal.

A departure for Jones wouldn’t come as much of a surprise to Alex fans. The 26 year old has fallen out of favour with Dario Gradi with youngsters Ashley Westwood and Matt Tootle being given their professional debuts at left back.

After signing from Exeter in 2007 for £65,000, Jones has gone on to make over 80 appearances for Crewe and in the summer was named club captain by former manager Gudjon Thordarson. Now consigned to the bench, Billy’s only appearance since Thordarson’s sacking was a cameo during the 2-1 defeat to Port Vale.

With his contract up in seven months time it seems like the end is nigh for Billy at Crewe.
