Former Alex defender Mat Bailey has signed for Northwich Victoria. Bailey, who was converted from a striker during his time at Crewe, was a surprise signing in 2005 after being released by Stockport County. He made just three appearances, including his one start, in his three years at Gresty Road, all three came last season.

He spent the last two months of the season on loan at Weymouth before he was expectedly released following the end of his contract.

The 6ft 7in Bailey was snapped up by Northwich over the weekend and Dino Maamria, manager of the Blue Square Premier side, is pleased with his new defender, telling the club’s official site: ‘It’s a great signing – he’s got great physical presence which is vital in this league.’

Northwich have already confirmed the signing of former Alex trainee Richie Sutton this summer.
