Another One Bites The Dust

George Abbey has left the club after having his contract terminated by mutual consent, he becomes the ninth player this week to leave Gresty Road.

The former Vale defender joins Chris McCready, Stuart Tomlinson, Mark Carrington, Colin Daniel, Luke Danville, Josh Thompson, Julien Baudet and Danny Woodards through the exit door, with the latter two turning down new contracts.

It’s all part of a mass cull from Gudjon Thordarson who could yet take the axe to his backroom staff, with assistant manager Neil Baker and physio Steve Walker looking odds on to leave the club.

Abbey joined the Alex in the summer of 2007 and was pretty much a fringe player throughout his two years at the club, filling in across the back four where needed. He made 30 appearances in League One and leaves despite having a year left on his contract.

It’s unlikely he’ll be the last casualty either with Eugen Bopp, Danny O’Donnell and Steven Schumacher expected to receive the same fate sometime soon.
