Alex Throw Away Two-Goal Lead

|

Goals from Elliott Nevitt and Shilow Tracey were not enough for Crewe Alexandra to get anything out of the game against Morecambe who came from two goals down to win at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday.

Assistant manager Ryan Dicker (in charge after manager Lee Bell was shown a red card after our last home game) named an unchanged team from last Saturday’s 3-1 win at Notts County with defender Zac Williams returning to the bench while former Alex loanee Chris Stokes started for the Shrimps.

The game’s opening chance came in the 3rd minute as Senior got in behind the Alex defence with his cross evading his teammates in the middle before Charlie Kirk would have an effort from distance following a one-two with Nevitt 10 minutes later. The hosts would take the lead in the 17th minute with a ball from Kirk playing Nevitt in behind the defence with the striker scoring at the second attempt with his head before Tracey’s right-sided cross almost found Kirk at the back post on 33 minutes.

The lead would be doubled 4 minutes after the break as a Holicek through-ball was given to Tracey, who cut in from the right before shooting past Archie Mair into the top corner with Joe Adams having one cleared off the line midway through the second half.

The Morecambe midfielder would get one back on 69 minutes for the Shrimps as a left-sided cross from Melbourne was converted by Adams at the back post, under the body of Harvey Davies, before they levelled 5 minutes later as a long-distance shot from Adams was saved by Davies into the path of substitute Jordan Slew to score the rebound. The comeback was completed with 7 minutes remaining as a low cross from Joel Senior turned into his own net by Demetriou.

The next couple of games see the Alex travelling to Doncaster Rovers next Saturday before hosting Sutton United the following Tuesday.

Final Thoughts:

It was a frustrating result against a team that didn’t really look like scoring until a couple of minutes before they got their opener, a move that was quite similar to the Adams goal – getting in behind on the Alex right with a cross to the back post that forced a save out of Davies.
